Yoga · Ages 1–4 · Calm & Balance
Yoga might sound like an unlikely match for a wriggly toddler — but yoga for toddlers is one of the loveliest ways to bring calm, balance, and body awareness into your little one's day. Done playfully, it's pure joy. Here are 10 simple yoga poses your toddler will love, plus how yoga becomes a genuine tool for calming and regulation.
Why yoga works beautifully for toddlers
Yoga for toddlers isn't about perfect poses or stillness — it's playful, animal-themed, giggly movement that happens to build remarkable things. Through simple poses, toddlers develop balance, strength, flexibility, and body awareness. They practise focus and following along. And because yoga is gentle and breath-aware, it nurtures something many toddler activities don't: calm. It's movement that settles rather than revs, which makes it a uniquely useful kind of physical play.
That calming quality is where yoga becomes a genuine regulation tool. Yoga's slow movements, stretches, and gentle breathing help soothe a toddler's nervous system, which is exactly why it's so valuable woven into a daily rhythm — a calm yoga moment in the morning, before a transition, or as a bedtime wind-down. Used proactively, before a toddler tips into overwhelm, a few playful poses can genuinely help head off a meltdown. Yoga is calm you can practise together, before it's needed.

These poses build strength, balance, and body awareness — and toddlers love their animal names.
01. Tree pose
Stand on one leg, hands up like branches, the other foot resting against the standing leg. Tree pose builds balance, focus, and a quiet sense of steadiness — wobbling is all part of the fun.
02. Downward dog
Hands and feet on the floor, bottom in the air, in an upside-down V. Downward dog stretches the whole body and gives toddlers a fun, energising change of perspective.
03. Cat and cow
On hands and knees, arch the back up like a cat, then dip it down like a cow. This gentle flowing movement builds flexibility and body awareness, and toddlers enjoy the animal sounds.
04. Flamingo pose
Balance on one leg like a flamingo, arms out for steadiness. A playful balance challenge that builds strength, focus, and confidence.
Stretching and opening poses
These gentle poses build flexibility and a feeling of calm.
05. Butterfly pose
Sit with the soles of the feet together, knees out, and gently flutter the legs like butterfly wings. Butterfly pose stretches the hips and is calming and easy to hold.
06. Cobra pose
Lie on the tummy and lift the chest up, like a snake — with a hiss for fun. Cobra gently stretches the body and builds back strength.
07. Star pose
Stand tall with arms and legs stretched wide like a big star. Star pose is an energising, joyful full-body stretch toddlers find satisfying.

These quiet poses are the heart of yoga's calming power — perfect for winding down or regulating.
08. Child's pose
Kneel and fold forward, resting the forehead down and arms by the sides — curled up small and cosy. Child's pose is deeply calming and a lovely way to rest and reset.
09. Resting pose
Lie flat on the back, arms and legs relaxed, eyes soft, simply breathing. A short resting pose settles the body and is a beautiful, calm ending to a yoga session.
10. Gentle breathing together
Sit comfortably and take slow breaths together — "smell the flower, blow out the candle." Calm breathing soothes the nervous system and teaches a regulation skill toddlers can use anywhere.
Tips for toddler yoga
1. Keep it playful, not perfect
Toddler yoga is about fun and movement, not correct form or stillness. Use animal names, make sounds, and giggle — there's no wrong way for a toddler to do a pose.
2. Use yoga as a calming tool
Yoga's real gift is calm. Weave it into the day as a wind-down or a regulation tool — a few poses before a transition or at bedtime — and use it proactively, before overwhelm sets in.
3. Keep sessions short
A few poses is plenty for a toddler. A short, joyful five-minute session works far better than a long one — stop while it's still fun.
4. Practise with your toddler
Do the poses alongside your child — toddlers love a yoga partner, and it's a calming, connecting moment for you too.
Frequently asked questions
What age can a toddler start yoga?
Toddlers can enjoy simple, playful yoga from around 18 months to 2 years. Keep it short, animal-themed, and fun — toddler yoga is about joyful movement, not perfect poses or holding still.
How does yoga help toddlers?
Yoga builds balance, strength, flexibility, body awareness, and focus, and it nurtures calm. Its gentle, breath-aware movement helps soothe a toddler's nervous system, making it a genuine tool for regulation and winding down.
Can yoga really calm a toddler down?
Yes — yoga's slow movements, stretches, and gentle breathing help settle the nervous system. Used proactively, before a toddler tips into overwhelm, a few calming poses can genuinely help prevent a meltdown.
Do I need any equipment for toddler yoga?
No equipment is needed at all — just a little clear floor space. A soft rug or mat is nice but not essential. Toddler yoga works anywhere, including the smallest flat.
My toddler won't hold the poses. Is that a problem?
Not at all — toddlers naturally flit between poses, and that's completely fine. The benefit comes from the playful movement and trying the poses, not from holding them still. Keep it light and follow your toddler's lead.
